Challah- a traditional egg bread that makes delicious sandwiches, french toast etc...
Mandelbread- something like a biscotti, but a richer and less dry. We make ours with a variety of ingredients including cherries, walnuts, cranberries and of course, chocolate chips.
Babka Cake- This isn't like anything you've tasted. It's part bread and part baked good with goodness swirled in. We are famous for our nutella and semi-sweet chocolate fillings.
At The Braided Baker our specialty is homemade challah. Regular treats also include mandelbread and babka cake. All of our products are steeped in Eastern European Jewish Traditions.
We keep our products simple so we can give you the best products with the best ingredients. We locally source whenever possible, including honey from the Bearded Bee Keeper in Germantown.

Challah was a staple in my family, a traditional egg bread eaten by Jewish families on Shabbat. It is sweet, soft and versatile and most of all delicious. It makes amazing french toast you want to devour, sandwiches you can't help but finish, and is a great snack. It's hard to stop eating!
My bubbie (grandma) made lots of jewish foods growing up. Every Thursday night, before Sabbath her home smelled of rich chicken soup, fresh baked goods and meat stewing in a pot. As a teenager, I never learned to cook like her and sadly she passed away when I was 17 years old. As an adult, after a trip to Israel for women, I saw the beauty in not just the final product but in creating it. I came home and started making Challah and other treats. I made it for my family, who loved it. Then friends and family would come over and they'd love it. Then people started asking me to make it for them and before I knew it I was baking Challah all day Friday.
The thing about most breads, but especially challah, is that I can give you the recipe, I can even tell you how to make it. But our creations will come out different. It takes experience, instinct and connection to the past to get the results you want and every batch is literally, a little bit different.
Every loaf has a little of my heart and soul in it and I am so proud to share it with you.
My father, Yale Falick, grew up very poor, handling his own paper route from the time he was 9 or 10 years old. Hard work and perseverance helped him graduate high school with honors and get into college. After three years, he was accepted into medical school where he became an anesthesiologist. He worked hard and put his family first. Later in life he became disabled and had little mobility. My mother, Elisa, took care of him until he died in November, 2024. I couldn't do much with my dad, but one thing that brought him joy is, every month I would send him a box of mandelbread. He would wait for the package and if it was late, he let me know about it. It filled my heart with love knowing how much he enjoyed it. He is no longer with us, but this is a labor of love to honor my father.

This is not gluten free. We make an alternative challah that has a lower gluten content, giving it a more doughy texture. This dough makes great bread for french toast or just pulling apart and enjoying. Based on availability.
